CALAVERAS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION INSTILLS SCHOOL PRIDE

The leadership students of Mark Twain Elementary School installed a trophy case to display decades worth of student earned awards at the Mark Twain Elementary Badger Den gym thanks to the generosity of a grant from  the Calaveras Community Foundation.

Explained Michelle Whitear Leadership Advisor, “The trophies had been sitting in boxes and displayed on the high cabinet ledge of the snack bar for years.  Our students love to look at those trophies and the Leadership class wanted to figure out a way to ensure that the public could also view the achievements as well”.

The students decided they wanted to apply for a grant to buy the case that was installed in the gym.  Mrs. Whitear wrote the grant, which includes the stipulation that the students curate and rotate the trophies to feature different sports reflecting the current season.  The Calaveras Community Foundation awarded the students $3,000 to make their vision come true with the students fundraising the additional $500 through a dance at the beginning of the school year. The case will also feature a plaque purchased by the students thanking the Calaveras Community Foundation.

Related Leadership President Ximena Robles added, “By placing the trophy case in the gym foyer it is showing school spirit and respect towards the former athletes and coaches of Mark Twain.” Likewise, Treasurer Maya Mann stated, “With the Calaveras Community Foundation’s support we were able to honor the long history that is held at Mark Twain. The fundraising and grant helped accomplish a purchase that will be appreciated for generations to come.”

“Sports are an integral and important aspect of life in our district”, related Superintendent Louise Simson. It is truly special that we see multiple generations of a single family contribute to the powerful athletic legacy of MTUESD.  Honoring that effort and grit through this student-led project is really cool. We are very grateful to the Calaveras Community Foundation.”
