The Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) again invites local non-profit groups to apply for funding of 2012 programs benefiting youth, health services, education, music, seniors, the arts, history and many other worthwhile causes. Application documents are now available at: www.calaverascommunityfoundation.org.

Supporting grassroots community programs continues to be CCF’s goal. Since the Foundation’s inception in 2001, well over $500,000 have been distributed to worthy causes through competitive grants, scholarships and assistance. Grant appllcations for 2012 must be submitted by Friday, June 1, 2012.

In 2011, over $63,000 was awarded and benefited twenty-one local groups. This increased giving over prior years was due largely to the continued generosity of local businesses and caring individuals.

Scott Ratterman, chair of the Foundation’s Grant Committee, states: “Our goal is to fund as many requests as possible, but with the need being so great in our county, that is not always possible. We do encourage community groups with projects that need funding to submit a grant application to CCF.” The Foundation has a long history of supporting a wide variety of projects ad programs that improve the quality of life in Calaveras County.

To obtain grant applications and complete instructions, visit the CCF website: www.calaverascommunityfoundation.org. Application packets may also be obtained by calling the Foundation’s office at 736-1845 and leaving contact information on the message phone.

New leadership and fresh opportunities mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Calaveras Community Foundation.

Effective this month, Linda Kangeter assumed the presidency of the foundation board for the Calaveras Community Foundation. Paul Stein, who had previously served as board president, officially ended his term and began a new position as philanthropy consultant.

The position of philanthropy consultant is groundbreaking for the foundation, as it is a part-time, paid position, the first of its kind offered by the foundation. Stein will be tasked with seeking out corporate and private donors, sponsorship and grants to bring more income to the foundation, increasing the number of grants and scholarships that the foundation can offer to community charities and organizations.

“I’m excited and can hardly wait to start,” Stein said, “It’s going to be a good use of my time, and I look forward to devoting my time to raising the level of consciousness and awareness about the foundation.”

The Calaveras Community Foundation was founded in January of 2000 with the goal of raising and recei-ving funds from those who wish to support charitable causes in Calaveras County, and to oversee the disbursement of those donations to charitable causes whose aim is to the help Calaveras County residents.

While Stein’s position is a paid one, treasurer Brent Harrington stressed that Stein’s wages would be drawn from income derived from two rental properties owned by the foundation. The foundation had been saving the rental income for the purpose of funding this position for some time.

“None of the monetary donations anyone has given us will go to paying Paul’s expenses,” Harrington said.

Harrington said that Stein, with his long history of community involvement, was the ideal candidate for this new position.

“We absolutely wanted somebody who knew the county, who had been around for a while, and who had a profile in the community,” Harrington said, “I’ve known Paul for 30 years, and know what he can do and how he does it, which made me even more comfortable with our choice.”

By hiring a part-time, paid philanthropy consultant to seek out new grants and donors, Harrington believes the foundation has made a wise investment for the future of the organization.

“We want to really expand our fundraising and grant-giving opportunities. Our goal is to keep raising funds and giving them away to charitable causes in Calaveras County,” said Harrington, noting that last year the foundation gave away more grants and more funding than in years past, with 23 grants totaling more than $63,000 going to various community organizations.

For new President Linda Kangeter, the importance of the Foundation’s role in Calaveras County could not be over-emphasized.

“I’m an ardent believer in community foundations,” said Kangeter, who has served on the foundation board since 2007. “A community foundation is a unique position. They’re not tied to a particular charity, so they can work with donors to connect them to a particular need. I’m really excited about it, as I believe so strongly in what the foundation does.”

Continuing the role of the Community Foundation as the link between Calaveras County charities and donors will be a top priority of Kangeter going forward in her presidency.

“The Calaveras Com-munity Foundation is a resource for donors, to help them make the most effective use of their charitable dollars both through immediate grants and through funds that can be designed to accomplish their charitable goals for many years,” Kangeter said. “The foundation is also a resource for our county’s charities, to help them obtain funding and administrative assistance.”

Kangeter also hopes to link not only charities and donors, but the smaller individual communities that constitute Calaveras County.

“I think one of the challenges in our community is that we have a group of small communities in our county,” Kangeter said, “I hope the foundation can help build a stronger sense of community in Calaveras County. We work more strongly together than we do working separately.”

Harrington was enthusiastic about Kangeter’s leadership, and looked forward to the legal and professional expertise she would bring to the foundation board.

“Linda is a natural addition to the board,” Harrington said, “I think she’ll do a great job, and that she’s a great addition to the foundation.”

According the Calaveras Community Foundation’s website, grant packets and applications for the 2012 grant cycle will be available in April.
Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has been the recipient of over $30,000 in the past three years that have gone to specifically benefit county seniors. These funds came to CCF from the Federlein Family Fund at the San Francisco Foundation.

Chris Federlein states: “I have had the opportunity to be involved in elder care for a number of years and have seen the impact of aging on people’s ability to make sound decisions and to continue to live in the environment they desire. It is especially difficult for seniors who have limited financial resources and/or family support. I feel fortunate that I am in a position where I can contribute financially to organizations that help seniors not only meet their basic needs, but also enhance their quality of life. Working with the Calaveras Community Foundation enables me to give back to the community and provide resources that are desperately needed.”

Funds have supplemented food banks in San Andreas, Copperopolis and Mokelumne Hill. The Calaveras County and Murphys Senior Centers have been the recipients of badly needed funds. The Volunteer Center has also benefited from the generosity of the Federlein Family Fund. CCF recently granted Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties $5,000 from the Federlein donation to provide services to seniors in many communities.

As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization exclusively serving Calaveras County charitable causes, CCF offers to donors the potential benefit of a tax deduction and the knowledge that they have helped a variety of worthy local causes,. Most donations are allocated to CCF’s general grant program, but options are available to donors to direct their donation to specific causes or areas (as the Federlein Family Fund has done).

Sierra Pacific Industries Foundation has recently donated $2,500 to the Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF).

CCF President, Paul Stein accepted this generous donation from Mark Luster, Community Relations Manager for Sierra Pacific Industries Foundation. Mr. Luster states “The Sierra Pacific Foundation recognizes the vital work of the Calaveras Community Foundation and the fundamental role it plays in this community by providing active and positive programs for youth, seniors and other residents of our county.”

As the Foundation begins year 12, financial supporters like SPI allow CCF to continue to distribute grants and scholarships to groups within our county that focus on youth, seniors, the arts and education. Since inception in 2001, CCF has provided more than $575,000 in grants, scholarships and assistance.

“We are very grateful to Sierra Pacific Industries for their ongoing commitment to the Calaveras Community Foundation, Stein said. The SPI partnership is of great benefit to the Calaveras community and allows the Foundation to continue to impact the lives of area residents. Working towards a common goal of improving the lives of area residents is a constant for both CCF & SPI.”

Like many community foundations, CCF is taking decisive action in 2012 to aggressively meet the emerging charitable needs of residents of Calaveras County. This ongoing effort is intended to enrich the quality of life of CCF’s grant/scholarship recipients now and into the future. Continued financial support of donors like Sierra Pacific Industries allows this to happen.

Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) is honoring past Board of Directors Genna Hurst and Allen Breed by designating them as Director(s) Emeritus.

In 1999, Genna Hurst, a long-time West Point resident, and friend Beth Childs, decided to explore the creation of a community foundation for Calaveras County. Their goal was to create a legacy of charitable giving which wuld connect local philanthropists with local nonprofit organizations. An informal committee of interested, dedicated, local residents formed the first Board of Directors, by-laws were adopted and the Calaveras Community Foundation was formed. Due to Genna’s foresight and forward thinking, CCF has been in continuous operation ever since.

Allen Breed, a long-time Calaveras resident and highly regarded leader in the criminal justice system, joined the CCF Board in 2006. Always an active Board member and leader, Allen helped guide the organization through its efforts to increase donations to the organization. In particular, his work with Rich Hoffman, the Jackson Rancheria Casino and Hotel CEO, resulted in the Rancheria becoming the largest cash donor to CCF.

“Allen and Genna were the heart and soul of the organization and our Board wanted to honor Genna and Allen for their years on our Board” said CCF Treasurer Brent Harrington. “It is through efforts like theirs that CCF, since 2001, has been able to issue $575,000 in grants.”

Eleven local groups have been awarded a total of $24,295 in the first round of 2011 funding by the Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF). Grass-roots programs focusing on teens, women’s health, music, seniors, arts, scouts, and food pantries for the people of Calaveras County are benefiting from these grants. Second round winners will be announced soon.

Scott Ratterman, Grant Committee Chair states: “We had so many worthwhile organizations requesting funds this year that it was more difficult that usual to choose the recipients. We encourage all groups who were not funded this year to persevere and reapply again next year.”

Paul Stein, president of the Foundation board of directors shared, “We are excited about the growing number of applicants and the broad spectrum of requests. We encourage community minded individuals to consider a monetary donation to the Foundation so grant funding can continue at this level.”

Grants awarded in this first round went to: Calaveras 4 Teen Center, Soroptimist International of Calaveras County, Paloma Community Group, American Legion, Calaveras Community Band, Copperopolis Community Center, San Andreas Halloween Carnival, Boy Scout Troop 302-Valley Springs, Copperopolis Community Food Pantry.

Since its inception in 2001, the Foundation has provided more than $550,000 in competitive grants, scholarships and assistance. 2011’s volume of giving for competitive grants is made possible, in no small part, by continued donations from Jackson Rancheria Casino and Hotel, Umpqua Bank and Sierra Pacific Industries.

Nine local groups have been awarded a total of $24,152 in the 2nd round of 2011 funding by the Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF). This latest round of grants benefits and gives monetary assistance to: health centers, fire fighters education, trail mapping, food pantries, building restoration, senior transportation services, skills classes and equipment costs. Total competitive grants awarded in 2011 equaled $48,447.

Paul Stein, president of the Foundation board of directors shared, “CCF was able to increase the funding and provide $10,000 more for competitive grants than in 2010.

A generous donation from the Federlein Family Fund at San Francisco Foundation enabled CCF to award grant funding to even more applicants this year.”

Benefactors of grants awarded during this 2nd round were: Mountain Oaks Health Centers, Foothill Fire Protection District, Arnold Rim Trail Association, Mokelumne Hill Community Church, Good Samaritan Food Pantry, Mountain Ranch Youth Alliance, The Volunteer Center, Mind Matters Clinic and Murphys Senior Center.

The Foundation, with this last round of funding, has awarded more than $550,000 in competitive grants, scholarships and assistance since it’s inception in 2001. Individuals and local businesses can establish funds or channel their charitable contributions through the foundation. Establishing a fund with CCF, a 501© 3 charitable organization, allows your contributions to be combined with others for investment purposes and to grow tax-free.

Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) presented Career and Technical Training scholarships to eight Calaveras High School students on June 1, 2011.

Funds for these scholarships were, in part, a result of generous community donations from Pacific Gas & Electric Company and Sierra Pacific Industries Foundation, Sonora. This particular legacy fund, Career and Technical Training Scholarship Fund, established by Paul and Darlene DeBaldo, in 2010, recognizes and addresses a serious need in our communities. Annually, very few scholarships are offered for students interested in pursuing career training, by seeking an associate degree and/or certificate of training in a specific industry. Educators share that more than 25% of graduation seniors in Calaveras County are candidates for such career training.

These winners, shown in the photo, will be attending local schools and
trade centers like San Joaquin Delta College, Columbia College, Modesto
JC, United Technical Institute, MTI College. Fields of study include:
automotive, fire fighting, nursing, veterinary medicine, culinary skills, and
more. Each scholarship winner received a $500 scholarship.

CCF, a 501© 3 non-profit organization, administers the funds that made
these scholarships possible. We welcome donations from like-minded
businesses and individuals who see the challenge ahead of making
scholarship money available to seniors taking other career paths.
